New Camaldoli Hermitage Needs Your Financial Support!

Dear friends:

The situation with the road has suddenly gotten very real.

Saturday, September 29, we finally received word that we had gotten expedited building review and full planning approval from the county to build the new access road. This has been a long, expensive, and tedious project involving geologists, engineers, soils experts and countless hours of meetings.

Two days later we got the estimate and contract from Chapin Construction who is ready to do the work, in two phases as recommended by the county. We are on their schedule, depending on dry weather, for October 15th. The shocker was that the cost of Phase I is already $1.2 million.

October 3, we had our first rains. We are never sure of these things, but predictions are for another El Niño this winter. This morning I walked our existing road and I fear that it will not survive another rainy season. Caltrans is still working on Paul’s Slide, which abuts our road, and, though they say it is not related, our road is still slipping. I saw several new cracks in the already damaged section.

Having already spent $300,000 of money we did not plan on spending for the road, this leaves the Hermitage in a sobering financial situation with very little cushion. And so along with our Capital Campaign we are reviving this GoFundMe page. If you are in a position to give a financial gift, please consider it, and help us keep this beautiful place of retreat and renewal open and accessible.

In hope, with thanks.

Fr. Cyprian, Prior

Please consider making a gift at this time either through this Go Fund Me page, or directly to the Hermitage (click here ).

Attention local Monterey and San Luis Obispo Friends!

The ordination of Br. Bede to the diaconate and Br. Ignatius to the priesthood will be taking place Friday, February 1st at 5:00 PM and Saturday, February 2nd at 11:00 AM, respectively.

As you know, space is very limited here at the Hermitage, and no rooms are available for the weekend. If anyone is planning on coming just for the liturgies themselves, please RSVP to Jill Gisselere by 1/26/2019 at jill@contemplation.com so we can have some idea of numbers and be prepared.

Dear friends,

I am pleased and grateful to report that in response to the video appeal over the holidays, the matching challenges for the Capital Campaign have been met and exceeded––over $120,000 raised. Obviously those funds will first be applied to continuing work on the road that connects the Hermitage to the world. As I have reported so many times, that part of it that is contiguous to a landslide was severely compromised by storm damage 2 years ago. So we are grateful to finally have the means and the support to begin to build a new one, though we still have much construction and fundraising work to raise the $1.1 million needed to complete this.

It has also been gratifying to see how this cause has deepened the relationship between the Hermitage and the wider community, including yourselves. We are thankful for each sacrificial donation, no matter how large or small. As we watch this new road come to reality before us, something about the solid ground on which we have built it resonates with our vision for the hermitage as an enduring mission to the world. We go into the future with hope that we can achieve our vision for the hermitage community through our continued engagement with all of you and your support and prayers.

Our thanks again, and please watch for more developments along the way. Following on feast of the Epiphany, as we end this Christmas season, we pray that the star of God’s justice may always shine bright in our minds, that we may behold the beauty of God’s sublime glory.

Fr. Cyprian, prior

Thank you everyone for your donations and spreading the news about the road.

This photo was taken yesterday (11/1/2018), just south of the entrance to our driveway, showing where the active slide meets our current entrance road.

We are so grateful for your continued support and prayers.

There is a contribution piece in the Los Angeles Times (March 6) by Pico Iyer, "Storms threaten their monastic way of life." Section A. It's well worth reading.

Hi Maddie, I believe the fundraising is intended to relieve a very challenging finance situation at the Hermitage. The place has not been able to accept any visitors so it has lost $300K in income in the past few months. That means expenses are far outstripping income, which puts a severe strain on the solvency of the Hermitage (which is a non-profit religious organization). Without the road repaired the place cannot accept guests safely, which means further income loss which would further drain the financial resources of the community. That is why any support is welcome during this period of crushing financial difficulty. There are certainly other communities hit by bad weather both in California and elsewhere this winter, and all are deserving of prayer and support. (I don't work for the Hermitage btw, I'm just a supporter of their community and mission).

Meant to also add the following... from the Lorica of St. Patrick: I arise today through God's strength to pilot me, God's might to uphold me, God's wisdom to guide me, God's eye to see before me, God's ear to hear me, God's word to speak for me, God's hand to guard me, God's way to lie before me, God's shield to protect me, God's host to secure me – against snares of devils, against temptations and vices, against inclinations of nature, against everyone who shall wish me ill, afar and anear, alone and in a crowd... Christ, be with me, Christ before me, Christ behind me, Christ in me, Christ beneath me, Christ above me, Christ on my right, Christ on my left, Christ where I lie, Christ where I sit, Christ where I arise, Christ in the heart of every man who thinks of me, Christ in the mouth of every man who speaks of me, Christ in every eye that sees me, Christ in every ear that hears me. Salvation is of the Lord. Salvation is of the Lord. Salvation is of the Christ. May your salvation, O Lord, be ever with us.

My prayers are with you! I myself cannot afford a donation at this time, but I will certainly pass the word at my parish, St. Patrick's in Dallas, TX. I hope that this will bring forth a little more help for you. I will also ask St. Benedict and our Blessed Mother to pray with us, that you are showered with enough resources to repair your road and have all the supplies and food that you need to sustain the brothers and the work that you all do. May God bless you, and send His angels to protect and keep you .

Greetings from Romeoville, Illinois. Was very sad to read about your current situation. I am spreading the word as best I can to people at St. Andrews in Romeoville and people in the "old neighborhood". I am hoping to get to Big Sur, California in November and was planning to visit your community. I have a sister that lives in San Diego and they have not been impacted by the rain as much as you have, but I worry about her and her family just the same. I know you are a survivor and will lead your community through this to be even stronger than ever! Sincerely, Sandy Prokopec Meinke

Dear Father Cyprian, I pray for the community's comfort and strength. I deeply believe God will see all of you through these devastating times. As I am poor as a church mouse I have nothing in financial means to give you. I worry about your food supply and I am praying that God will provide. Be strong and know that this too shall pass. Sending prayers and great respect. Your brother in love and service. Michael OM+

Many years ago I visited the Hermitage and was deeply touched by the liturgy and grateful for your presence calling us forth. I also have attended many of Michael Fish's retreats and am ever blessed for the gifts he brings to the spiritual journey. I am called always to open to the Holy Mystery when I listed to Cyprian"s music, especially, "This is Who You Are". Also last weekend I visited for the first time the Incarnation Monastery and met the community there... the ministry that you each participate in invites us to wholeness and truth! So we need to continue to to get the path/road open and safe for the travelers on their Camino!! Blessings, Sue
