– A voyage covering the length of Africa from South to North entirely by foot and paddle boat. Crossing Africa expedition is meant to document and share with the world everyday lives of Africans in an entirely unique way all while pushing the human body to its physical limits.

One continent. One country. One step at a time. Mario Rigby is about to begin the second half of a rigorous journey across Africa from Cape Town, South Africa to Malawi where he continued on a Kayak to Tanzania along Lake Malawi (the 3rd largest lake in Africa). The rest of his journey will include, Tanzania, Kenya, Ethiopia, Northern Sudan and Egypt, he will need more help as this leg of the journey is the most difficult. His journey began on Nov. 24, 2015. During this anticipated two-year expedition, Rigby expects to fulfill a burning drive for exploration and adventure as well as to reinforce his belief in humanity, all while testing his body and mind to the absolute limit. Equipped with essential travel gear, Rigby is trusting his preparation and belief in the goodwill of strangers he’ll meet along the way to complete this journey. While walking through 9 countries, and a diverse range of environments, including deserts, jungles, and areas of civil unrest, Rigby will document his travels on his website MarioRigby.com in order to let the world follow every of his steps.
Rigby has prepared for this moment for nearly a year before setting foot in Africa. There’s the paperwork, like visas and travel documents, hours and hours of research studying maps, survival tactics, travel gear, and so much more. Rigby also consulted with expedition experts such as Julian Fisher who has crossed Africa from east to west. To overcome physical barriers, Rigby trained his body to withstand long endurance walking and terrain trekking, along with survival skill tactics and learning how to use the environment to his advantage. Just recently, he completed a 15 day walk from the CN Tower in Toronto to the top of Mount Royal in Montreal, walking 12-15 hours each day, and covering more than 550 kilometers, all by foot. Along the way, Rigby was overwhelmed by the kindness of strangers who took him into their homes, providing warm meals and a place to sleep.

“The drive for curiosity and exploration is vanishing in today's fast-paced and digital world,” said Rigby. “I think unlike past generation, more people are hesitant to venture out and meet strangers. We are all filled with unimaginable potential - perhaps my adventure will inspire others to move away from their comfort zones and unleash theirs.”

Crossing Africa has international coverage by CTV National News, The Globe & Mail, Turks & Caicos SUN, CBC radio, other radio hosts and multiple newspaper publications. I invite you to join me on this unique and compelling journey exploring Africa.

This is a very touching story about heros and potential heros in Sudan...

It started at the Capital Radio 91.6FM show in Khartoum, I had an interview with Munir who hosts a show there on Fitness and Health, right up my alley for those who don't know my background I started in competitive Track and Field and then to fitness. Immidiately we clicked and Munir asked if I'd like to do a Talk with his youth MMA fighters that he coaches, I was nervous and hesitant at first but thought this would be a fantastic opportunity to learn more about Sudannesse youth culture.

Let me give a quick background on Munir. He's not your typical human being. Born Sudannesse and raised American while married at an incredibly young age only to come back to Sudan and then be raised on a farm with his family, this young man has ambitions to help the youth of Africa realize their potentional and become the great leaders that Africa so much deserves. Munir along with his friends and family decided to start MMA classes in Khartoum. At first they would train on muddy grounds where dust storms and rain would ruin their sessions. Slowly over time progress was made to build a training center with their own pennies and labour. Now the first and only MMA center in all of Sudan called Muqatel Training Center is here because of Munir's vision. I was astounded at how well put together facility was, it's a must see if you visit Khartoum.

Munir picked me up on his motorcycle to get to his training centre the next day. The facility gleamed with hope and aspirations. I was honored and grateful to just witness this. Before I even started my talk kids asked a million questions that adults usually never ask. They typically want to know the essence of where true courage comes from, how can they achieve and overcome fear. I always tell them, it comes from passion, knowledge and application, sometimes not in that order but always together.

The youths and the coaches at Muqatel Training Center were warmfelt, It was an emotional experience for me. I like to see Africa rise, there is so much potential in this massive continent that is due to reach 4 billion people in as little as 50 years. There needs to be sustainable city projects and education plans in order to feed the mouths of these new people who will eventually become participants on the growth of humanity.

I believe in this project 100 percent and wish I could support with what ever I have. My witness and testimony is my strongest tool, if you can help support the coaches and young athletes at Muqatel Training Center please do so. The money will go to their continued maintainaence, travelling for MMA competitions as to help put Sudan on the map of athletics and mixed martial arts.

I'm in Ethiopia and it's beautiful here. My time in Kenya however felt too short and fast. Charlotte and I covered roughly 1000km in 1 month. I climbed Mount Kenya, walked with Massai warriors and enjoyed the vastness of scenic lands. I will write a blog on my experience of Kenya on my website www.mariorigby.com

Ethiopia, although I've only been here a few days has great coffee, delicious foods and a very diverse background of African tribes who live along the Great Rift Valley. I will hang out in Addis for 2 weeks where I try to find funds to continue my walk across this cuntry, then begin my Ethiopia to North Sudan walk. I'm really excited to explore this incredibly vibrant and rich country.

On the sad news my most trusting companion Charlotte will be heading back to Berlin for school. She has joined me solidly from Iringa, Tanzania to Moyale, Kenya (border between Kenya and Ethiopia). It won't be the same without her, the bravest person you could ever meet.
